Medical Information
Bramhall High School is committed to providing emergency first aid provision to deal with accidents and incidents affecting students, staff, and visitors, and supporting pupil’s medical conditions in school. We take every reasonable precaution to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff.
Mrs V. Marshall is the Medical Needs Co-ordinator and Mrs H. Jevons is the Medical Needs Assistant. Both have undertaken significant statutory and additional training to support students in school with medical conditions and in the event of a first aid incident, including; First Aid at Work, CPR & AED training, Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes, Administration of Medication in an Educational Setting, Understanding Low Mood and Depression, Understanding Anxiety, Advanced Child Protection, Safeguarding Young People, Understanding Self-Harm, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Mental Health Awareness, Assessing for Suicide in Kids, and Understanding Eating Disorders.
The school has clear guidance on the administration of medication at school and all use of medication is done under the appropriate supervision of a member of staff unless there is an agreed plan for self-medication, but only with the written consent of the pupil’s parent/guardian.
Pupils with medical conditions have access to their emergency medication and school has the facility to safely store spare medication, such as inhalers, auto-injectors (Epi-Pens, Jext, etc.) and insulin. We have a medication-only fridge available to store medicines which need to be refrigerated, such as insulin, antibiotic liquids, injections, eye drops and some creams.
Prescribed medication for short-term medical conditions that require medication during the school day, e.g., antibiotics, can be stored and administered when it is provided by a parent/guardian in the original container in which they were dispensed, together with the prescriber’s instructions for administration, and properly labelled, showing the name of the patient, the date of prescription and the expiry date of the medicine with written parental consent.
If you have previously consented to school providing paracetamol, one dose can be given to students during the school day to help manage minor ailments such as cold symptoms, headaches, and menstrual cramps.
We do not hold a supply of ‘over the counter’ medications; however, with written parental consent, ‘over the counter’ medications, e.g., antihistamine, ibuprofen, can be stored and administered for on-going or short-term medical conditions, such as hay fever, heavy periods, migraines, injuries, etc.
It is important parents keep us informed with up-to-date information regarding their child’s medical condition and needs, to enable us to support them in school. We can be contacted at medical@bramhallhigh.stockport.sch.uk or on 0161 439 8045 ext. 195.
If your child is too unwell to remain in school, you will be contacted by a member of staff to arrange their collection. Should you be contacted directly by your child asking to be collected due to illness, please advise them to inform a member of staff who will arrange for your child to attend the Medical Office where they will be assessed, and a member of staff will contact you with the outcome.
Michelle Harley is our Wellbeing Governor. She, and all staff and governors at Bramhall High, have undergone a comprehensive medical induction and receive on-going training at regular intervals. We also have several members of staff who are designated first aiders and emergency first aiders.
The school’s First Aid Policy and Medical Policy are detailed on the school website. If you require a policy in a language other than English, or in a different format, please ask at main reception.
